Doorstep flood advice for residents

Flood experts from our partner agencies have been offering doorstep advice to residents in Loughborough - one of the places badly affected by flooding in recent years.

Representatives from Leicestershire County Council, the Environment Agency and Severn Trent's new community flooding team spent two days knocking on doors and talking to people about their flood resilience.

They were joined by national flooding campaigner Mary Long-Dhonau OBE - better known as 'Flood Mary' - who was on hand to offer practical flood resilience advice from her FloodMobile.

Zoe Heath, Flood Engagement Officer for Leicestershire County Council (the local lead flood authority), said: "We want to make sure residents know they haven't been forgotten and that they have the information and support they need.

It's very much a multi-agency approach to help mitigate the flood risk for people living in this area. We're also advising residents what they can do for themselves to make their homes as flood resilient as possible.

One inexpensive measure recommended by Flood Mary is to cover airbricks with aluminium tape to stop flood water.

Residents are also advised to seek out 'build back better' home insurance.

Resident Sarah Parr, whose street has flooded twice in the last two years, was one of the Loughborough residents visited by flood officers.
Sarah, whose neighbours have not been able to return home since their property was flooded last time, said: "I'm constantly checking the weather forecast and worrying that it might happen again.

"I've signed up for flood alerts so that we can be prepared for the worst case scenario. I stock up on food and pet food so we don't have to wade through flood water to go out and get the basics. It's so important to be prepared."
