Develop a Household Emergency Plan

Over the years we have seen a number of emergency situations across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, including gas explosions, severe adverse weather and flooding, to name just a few.

We encourage residents to be prepared for such emergency situations in the future and develop your own Household Emergency Plan.

What is a Household Emergency Plan

The plan allows you to have important information such as what you should do, who you need to contact and supplies you should have to hand, all in one place to help you respond to an emergency more efficiently.

Emergency kit

In case you become trapped in your home and unable to get to shops or experience prolonged loss of utility services to your home, it’s important to keep an emergency stock of essential supplies to see you through.

Incidents such as power outage or food shortage can happen at any time, so to be prepared for any unexpected situation you should ensure your emergency supplies match your needs and are enough for at least a few days.

Emergency supplies you should have to hand:

  • bottled water
  • non-perishable food (e.g. ready-to-eat tinned meat, fruits, vegetables etc.)
  • baby supplies (if relevant)
  • pet food (if relevant)
  • bin bags
  • battery or wind-up radio
  • battery or wind-up torch
  • spare batteries
  • portable power bank
  • prescription medications
  • first aid kit
  • hygiene supplies (e.g. hand sanitiser, wet wipes, toilet paper etc.)
  • cash
