Emergency centre? Training is a chance to put plans into practice

Emergency centre training for staff at one local council was an opportunity to practise activating, setting up and running an emergency centre in a live-response environment.

The training at Blaby District Council guided staff through the steps involved in establishing an emergency centre (EC) from the first call to activation, ensuring the correct structures, communication channels and decision-making processes were in place from the outset.

ECs may be required if people are evacuated from their homes or otherwise displaced during an emergency.

A key part of the exercise was understanding roles and responsibilities, both within teams and across partner organisations. Clear leadership, coordination and collaboration are key to delivering an effective multi-agency response.

Participants also explored the importance of accurate documentation, making sure that decisions, actions and information were captured consistently throughout the incident.

The training concluded with a structured handover and closedown process, showing how to transition safely from response back to normal operations while maintaining clear records and accountability.

The exercise strengthened collective readiness and reinforced the importance of working together to support our communities when it matters most.
