Storm Claudia: Resilience still key to reduce flood risk

Our teams worked throughout the night to monitor the impact of Storm Claudia, which triggered an amber weather warning for heavy rain across the region.

Up to 40mm of rain fell in many areas, with isolated totals reaching 96mm.

Despite this, flooding didn’t reach the record levels of January 2025, when communities experienced some of the worst flooding in decades. However, several roads were impassable due to flood water, and the amber warning meant Loughborough’s historic street fair had to close for the night.

Since January, LRF partners have carried out extensive works to reduce flood risk, including major improvements to highways and drainage.

In the wake of Storm Claudia, we’re urging everyone to boost their flood resilience by:
Drawing up an emergency plan for your home or business
Signing up for flood alerts
Preparing an emergency grab bag of essential items

Storm Claudia did not have the same impact locally as some of the devastation seen in parts of Wales.
Our partner agencies work hard all year round to mitigate flood risk, but there’s also lots that homes and businesses can do to make themselves more flood resilient.
